Understanding Your Abs:

Before we start on our journey to a summer-ready physique, let’s get to know the muscles that make up our abs. The rectus abdominis, obliques, and transverse abdominis – are the rock stars of your core!

The rectus abdominis runs down the front of your abdomen and is responsible for that coveted six-pack appearance. The obliques, located on the sides, allow for twisting and bending motions. Lastly, the transverse abdominis, often overlooked but vital, acts as a natural weight belt, providing stability and support for your spine.

These may seem pretty hard to remember now, but the more you get into sculpting that stomach, the more likely you are to pick out exactly what you’re looking to work on.

Why are abs so important, you ask?

Well, besides giving you a toned midsection, strong abs contribute to better posture, reduced risk of back pain, and improved athletic performance. When your core is strong, your overall fitness level soars!

Even for seemingly unrelated sports like running, a strong core will allow you to take in more oxygen every breath and effectively boost your performance. So, let’s get those abs fired up for summer.

Nutrition Tips for Abs:

You’ve heard the saying, “abs are made in the kitchen,” and boy is that true! To unearth those sculpted abs from beneath the comfy layer of winter chub you may have developed in the cold season (don’t worry, we all literally do it), you need a healthy and balanced diet that complements your workout efforts.

Here are some Trojan-approved nutrition tips that will help you chisel your way to a defined midsection:

  1. Protein power:Protein is the building block of muscle, and including enough of it in your diet is crucial for ab definition. Lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish, tofu, and legumes should be staples in your meals. Try out Trojan’s protein shake recipes for a delicious way to fuel your workouts.
  2. Fuel with fibre:Fibre-rich foods, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, keep you feeling fuller for longer, which can prevent overeating and aid in fat loss -rich recipes to keep your meals. Don’t worry though, this doesn’t have to be “rabbit food.” High-fibre snacks can be both healthy and flavourful. Personalised trail mix, anyone?
  3. Stay hydrated:Drink water like it’s your job! Hydration is not only essential for overall health but also to maintain a healthy metabolism and keep bloating at bay. Don’t just sip away when you’re working out, though. You should continuously stay hydrating yourself throughout your everyday routine to ensure you keep dehydration at bay, always.
  4. Healthy fats:Don’t fear fats! Incorporate sources of healthy fats like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil into your diet. They provide satiety and support hormone regulation. If you’ve heard horror stories about consuming fats, know they’re most likely referring to unhealthy fats, such as saturated fats and trans fats.
  5. Limit added sugars and processed foods:Cut back on sugary treats and processed foods as they contribute to excess belly fat and bloating. We’re not saying to dump them entirely, though! Remember, being healthy isn’t about a crash diet in which you deny yourself from enjoying your favourite treats entirely. Rather, it’s about moderation, sustainable healthy swaps, and making your nutrition work for you, not the other way around.
